Abstract:
The proposal of this study was to Check the alterations provided by the adenotonsillectomy. We have studied 25 patients who refered nasal óbstruction by adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Nasal mucociliary function (FMCN) was tested by the saccharin test in the pre-operative and 30 days after the adenotonsillectomy. The test was done in the control group who had 25 patients that were tested in the same way. The tests were done in determined conditions of temperature and relative air humidity. The mean time of mucociliary transport MM) before the adenotonsillectomy was (mean ± SD) 27.98 ± 5.75 minutes (min) and after the adenotonsillectomy was 11.93 ± 3.61 min. In the control group the mean time obtained was 9.29 ± 3.47 min. The difference in the mean times obtained before and after the adenotonsillectomy was statistically significant (p < 0.05). The mean time of TTM of the patients in the postoperative was not significantly different from that of the control subjects (p = 0.8501). There are significant postoperative enhancement of the FMCN and significant reduction of the nasal resistances when we consider each patient such as his own control.
