Abstract:
In the last year the popularization of endoscopy has emphasized the importante of gastroesophageal reflux in patients with chronicpharyngitis, latyngitis, asthma, andchroniccough. Epigastricpain or burning are well know nsymptoms of gastroesophageal reflux, but the otolatyngological manifestations are far more subtle, including odynophagia, cervical dysphagia, excessive salivation, globus pharyngeo, hoatseness, foreign body sensation, repeated throat clearing, throat burning or disconfort, and even laryngospasm. The examination may reveal posterior laryngitis, vocal cords edema or contatt granuloma, subglotic inflammation, diffuse edema and inflammated mucosa in hypopharynx and trachea. Pharyngitis orlatyngitis associated to gastroesophageal reflux is a presumptive diagnosis achieved mainly by history andendoscopy findings. Barium esophagrams may help and the clinical response to a short trvatment with H2 receptor antagonist also supports tlăe diagnose. It seems that 24h eophageal pH monitoring is the new gold standard to evaluate gastroesophageal reflui disease.
