Abstract:
From 1982 to 1992, 63 patients presented to our service with orbital complications of sinusitis. In this report we will analyze our clinical material with emphasis on the type of orbital complication, clinical presentations and radiographic fèndings. There was a higher incidence of complications in the second decade of life (49,2%) and 87,3% of the cases occurred until the third decade of life. The main complains wexe orbital swelling (96,8%), orbital erythema (74,6%), and rhinorrhea (69,8%). The most frequent radiographic ftndings (x-ray, CT MRI) were pansinusitis (42,8%), maxila - ethmoidal sinusitis (28,6%) and maxillaty sinusitis (15,9%). All patients were treated with intravenous antibiotics, and surgety was performed in 33,4% of the patients. Almost all patients (98,4%) had a good out comeand one patient died (cavernous sinus thrombosis). Orbital complications of sinusitis can bea life threatening condition. CT and MRI are a great aid in the diagnosis of these complications.
