Correlation between the mastoid size and miryngoplasty results

Abstract:
Considering that the pneumatization grade is an indirect method of Eustachian cube function since birth to sometimes adults life, we correlate the miryngoplasty results with the size and pneuniatization of the mastoid with the purpose to preview the surgical results. Patients submitted to miryngoplasty in ENT Department of HCFMUSP during 1989 to 1991 were studied. Eighty patients were selected 40 with good surgical results and 40 with poor results. All the patients had been submited to radiological study of the mastoid air sistem. The X ray in Schüller position was evaluated in order to stabilish the pneuntatization grade and submited to measurement in order to estimate its area. We did not find any significant difference comparing mastoid area and surgical results.
