Evaluation of otorhinolaryngology education and training for medical residents in Brazil.

Abstract:
The education and training in otorhinolaryngology in 23 Brazilian medical residency programs was evaluated The objective was to learn about the requirements of training in this area and to propose ideas for discussion and for the elaboration of proposals aiming at its improvement. The replies to a 34-question questionnaire sent to Otorhinolaryngology Services with medical residency programs were evaluated. In the evaluation. the following parameters were to be positive: participation of residents in Congresses, acess to most diagnostic testes, participation in phonoaudiology services, participation in scientific activities, orientation in outpatient tare and surgery, anatomical dissection in the laboratory, a special surgery timetable for residents, and learning of basic surgery. The following parameters were considered to be negative: small number of bells, insufficient number of certain beds of surgery insufficient acess to journals atol books, little orientation in head and neck surgery, scarcity of positions and of Staf members, and residencies without minimal teaching requirements.
