Visual Mechanism in Balance Control in Normal Adults: Smooth Pursuit Eye Movements.

Abstract:
The study smooth pursuit eye movement (SPEM) in normal adults. The subjects are 85 adults more than 20 yearsold who do not present signs or symptoms suggesting abnormal vestibular function, visual deficits, neurological disorders, diabetes, arterial hypertension, migraines, oculomotor deficits or the use of psychoactive drugs. The following variables are studied in smooth pursuit eye movement: gain, average velocity, the number of saccadic movements for correction and distortion, at the amplitudes of 15.2, 23.0 and 30.6°. The variables are related to each other and to the subjects' age, educational level and sex. This leads to the conclusion that there is no interference of educational level or sex. As for SPEMs, the gain shows negative correlation and the distortion shows positive correlation with age. The increase in amplitude and the velocity of stimulation causes a decrease in the number of correction and distortion SENIS and an increase in the average velocity of SPEMs. As for right and left ocular movement, average velocity of SPEMs is greater on the left.
