Abstract:
Fibrous dysplasia of the paranasal; sinus is uncomtnon and frequently represents a diagnostic challenge. We present a series of 20 cases of fibrous dysplasia treated at our department during the past ten years. The patients ages ranged from nine to 40 years, 75% were less than 20 years old. There was a 2:1 (13:7) female predominante. The bones affected were: maxilla (12), mandbbuae (5), frontal (2) and sphenoid (1). The major symptoms were facial deformity (19) and unilateral visual loss (1). The monostotic forro was the rnost common (17) followed by the polystotic for (3). Surgery was performed in all cases, in three recurrence occurred and a procedure was performed. Only one patient, with the sphenoid fibrous dysplasia presented with sequel (unilateral visual loss). Histology revealed in all cases marrow replacement by whirls of spincile cells without osteoblasts rimmirig the fibro-osseous tissue. The major complaint was facial deformity. In our opinion treatment should be conservative surgery with preservation of important structures. Recurrence may occur and if necessary it can be treated with a second procedure.
