Experience in 115 cases of acoustic neuroma surgery

Abstract:
Between January 1,986 and August 1994, 115 acoustic neuromas were treated in the Hospital das Clínicas da Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de São Paulo and private office by surgical excision by the same surgeon. The clinical and diagnostic findings are presented. The translabirintine approach has been used in 87% of the cases. When hearing preservation was attempted, the middle fossa approach or retrolabirintine approach had been adopted. Despite early diagnosis, the number of patients sui 'Table for hearing preservation surgery remains very limited and carefull selected. These results emphasize the advantages of translabirintine approach, offering greater security to the facial nerve and lower morbility. The retrolabirintine approach is a tecnique with great future in the hearing preservation. In our series 50% of the cases had good. preservation.
