Abstract: Immunological functions of the tonsils and possible effects of their removal are still controversial. We studied 30 patients submitted to adenotonsillectomy in accordance with the following criteria: age between 3 and 15 years, recurrent adenotonsillitis, nasal obstruction and apnea, moderate or severe tonsillar hypertrophy and rhinopharynx obstruction of more than 60% Of the by the adenoid. The serum immunoglobulin (IgA, IgM e IgG) levels were measured prior to adenotonsillectomy and a year later. The results were compared to a control group of 30 patients, chosen by the same criteria, but that were not submitted to adenotonsillectomy. We also studied the local and sistemic effects of the surgery. The postoperative levels of the immunoglobulins although decreased, were still normal. Adenotonsillectomy, in our study did not disturb the normal humoral immune system, and it wouldn't be a contraindication of adenotonsillectomy in most patients. We also noticed a reduction of clinical findings and upper airways infections.
