Sinobronchitis: a study enphasizing the otoloryngologic component.

Abstract: This prospective study analyses a group of patients with sinobronchitis enphasizing the otolaryngolocic component. The 38 patients were evaluated by: clinical symptomatology, standart x-rays of the hest and paranasal sinuses, computed tomograpy (ET) of the paranasal sinuses, laboratory tests, maxillary sinusocospy, microbiology of the maxillary sinus secrecteons and histopathology of the maxillay sinus mucosa. Based on the microbiology findings from the maxillary sinus secretion, patients were divided into two groups, A (positive culture) and B (negative culture) Standard x-ray of the paranasal sinus in the Waters projection are a realible radiologic method to detect maxillary and frontal sinusitis. CT of the paranasal sinuses is superior to convencional radiology in establishing the diagnoses of ethmoidal sinusites. The histopathologic findings were compatible with the diagnoses of maxillary sinusitis in all patients. In this series, 63% of the patients had positive cultores in at least one of the maxillary sinuses. The most commom bacteria isolated were Haemophilus influenzae (51 17v) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (30%). Anaerobic bacteria were isolated in 20% of the maxillary sinus secretions and fungi in 10% Sore throat, nasal and post-nasal purulent secretions were statiscally more frequent in Group A. Complete opacifcation of the maxillary sinuses was the radiologic finding observed in most patients in this subset, with sensitivity of 79% and specificity of 8690.
