Abstract: The authors present 16 cases of brain abscesses secondary to chronic media otitis referred to Otolaryngology Department of HCMUSP frorn 1980 to 1995. Brain abscesses were 0,71% of total chronic media otitis in that period, the majority of patients affected was male young people, and cholesteatoma was found in 62,5% of patients. Single abscess was frequent, at temporal and temporoparietal sites (62,5%). The organisms cultured were Proteus rnirabilis, Baderoides sp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. The authors discuss the need of early clinical and surgical treatment for these cases, as well as the prevention of intracranial complications of cholestetoma.
