Abstract: Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is a complex disease that represents a risk of substancial morbity and mortality. The OSAS is characterized by recurrent episodes of obstructed breathing, during sleep, caused by the collapse of the upper airway. This is usually preceded by many years of loud snoring. The main symtom of OSAS is excessive daytime sleepiness or hypersomnolence due to the fragmented sleep that increases the patient risk to develop a life-threatening problem (cardiovascular disease, stroke etc). The USA National Comission on Sleep Desordens Research estimates that the loss of productivity from the excessive daytime sleepiness is more than US$16 billion per year. The authordiscuss the modere trends in diagnosis and therapy to this Syndrome and emphasizes the new use of the CO2, laser to treat snoring and some fornis of sleep apnea.
