Abstract: There are disagreements about the bacterial role in the genesis and maintenance of chronic secretory otitis media (CSOM). Large foreign series report even 40% of positive middle ear cultures. In this investigation, samples of 94 children's ears with clinical and tympanometric diagnose of CSOM were send to bacteriological study. There was just one positive culture among all. It had grown Staphylococcus epidermidis, considered contamination. The possible causes of this disagreement with the literature were discussed.
