Noise-Induced Hearing Loss in Pacients with Systemic Diseases.

Abstract: Introduction: Noise-Induced hearing loss (NIHL) is characterized by neurosensorial hypoacusis of slow and progressive evolution in a majority of cases symmetrical, and is secondary to exposition of chronic noise. Purpose: In this study, we intend to evaluate the possible repercussions of the systemic diseases on the evolution of the patients exposed to noise. Material and Methods: We have studied 63 patients undergoing treatment in the Clinical Hospital of the Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, State of São Paulo, with ages varying between 29 and 68 years and with a history of exposure to noise, selecting those who presented audiometric curves suggestive of NIHL (6 men and 10 women). Their ages ranged between 34 and 68 years, with a mean age of 52. Of those, 62,5% had some chronic systemic diseases mainly hypercholesterolemia (60%), hypertriglyceridemia (20%), systemic arterial hypertension (20%) and chronic hepatopathy (10%). Of the patients exposed to noise but without audiometric curves suggestive of NIHL, 10 were men and 37 women, with ages ranging between 29 to 58 years (mean age of 46,9). Of those, only 12,77% had some form of chronic suggestive diseases. We can not, as yet, conclude that patients with systemic diseases are more prone to NIHL. Conclusion: However, due to the higher incidence of those diseases in individuals with noise-induced hearing loss, we call attention to the need for increased care with such patients, in the sense of providing care for the prevention of hearing loss.
